Academic writing papers have two major types namely: (i) Argumentative (ii) Analytical. Both types have their own set of rules and specifications to write. A reader is able to identify what type your academic writing paper is on by reading the introduction. The introduction consists of the thesis statement and it suggests whether your paper is argumentative or analytical. Argumentative papers are usually written on controversial topics such as, ‘Abortion, Death Sentence,’ which allow the writer to construct an argument. The writer provides evidence, examples and facts to prove or disprove the argument.
In this type of academic writing paper the student poses a question for which they try to explore the answers. For instance the question can be ‘How Dinosaurs became extinct?’ A student has to study the background information and than based on the information come up with his/her own conclusion or possible suggestion.
You will come across both types of academic writing papers most of your academic career. Both types are unique in their own ways and provide ample learning opportunities.
