Abstract
This academic paper examines one of the deadliest volcanic eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines in 1991. Mount Pinatubo is a dormant volcano located in the Luzon region of the Philippine islands. The eruption of the volcano resulted in mass deaths around the region and disruption in the communication and aviation services of the country. Before the major eruption took place on 15th June 1991 minor earthquakes measuring up to 4.3 to 5 magnitudes occurred in the nearby regions resulting in mass evacuations of people living in the area. The author of the academic paper discusses the repercussions the country faced after a major volcanic eruption and how it affected the atmosphere of the Earth in general.
From the Paper
In June 1991 the second largest volcanic eruption of the 20th century took place in the region of Luzon located in the Philippines which is 55 miles away from the capital city of Manila. In 1990 a major earthquake of 7.8 magnitude recorded on the Richter scale, 100 Kilometers northeast of the volcano, was measured initiating the eruption process of the Mount Pinatubo (Rosenburg, 2007). Mount Pinatubo’s major eruption took place on 15th June, 1991 at 1:42 PM local time which lasted for 9 hours. The deadly eruption caused the ash to block the sun rays for several weeks disrupting the communication and aviation services of the country. All the major airports were closed due to the ash and nearly 800 people died living near the volcanic region.
