Abstract
This term paper examines Martial Arts from the Chinese perspectives. Martial Arts are basically an unarmed combat i.e. the use of hands and legs mainly for self defense or as a sport without the use of weapons. Martial Arts have mainly originated from Eastern Asia many centuries ago and have continuously grown towards the western world. There are many health, spiritual and physical benefits of Martial Arts. The author of the term paper discusses a brief history of Martial Arts and the different types of Martial Art practices in various parts of Eastern Asia. Furthermore, the author suggests whether Martial Arts are a necessity in today’s modern era where the use of weapons has become very common.

“Karate, a type of Martial Arts is known to have its origins from India with a man named Bodhiharma. Around 1,400 years ago Bodhiharma went to the Shaolin Temple in China to give lecture about his religion to the monks. The religion consisted of some exhausting physical exercises and strenuous training to strengthen the body”, (American Black Belt Academy, 2002). Later these exercises became well known gradually over other parts and spread to different neighboring countries. The main purpose of these exercises physical fitness but gradually they became a form of self defense. In the modern world there are different types of Martial Arts being practiced among many East Asian countries such as Taekwondo, Jeet Kun Do, Karate, Kung Fu, Muay Thai and Aikido. Some forms of Martial Arts such as American kick boxing, heavy weight boxing in the western world have evolved from these different types of Martial Arts.
