How to Write an Academic Paper in APA Style?
Whether you are in college, high school or a university writing an academic paper is something that you can never avoid throughout your academic career. Academic paper writing has different styles of writing depending on your instructor that what writing style he/she may assign you. The most common type of writing style among the academic institutes is the APA (American Psychological Association) style. Formatting an academic paper in a particular writing style is vital to score a good grade. If your academic paper is not properly formatted according to the specified parameters by your instructor you may loose points. Read below to learn to write an academic paper in APA style.
Use 8.5 by 11 inch paper with 1 inch margin from all sides to write the text. This is the standard page setup.
The paper’s title must appear on one line with the author’s name in the next line. Include the name of the association or school in the third line. All three lines must be centered vertically and horizontally.
Write ‘Running Head:’ on top left of the page followed by the title version in caps. The title version will appear on all pages on the top right of the page. The shorter version of the title will appear on all the pages with 5 spaces between the page numbers.
Include an Abstract
Write an abstract on the second page of the academic paper. The word Abstract should be centered followed by 75-100 words summary of your academic paper.
Use Simple Language
Use direct, simple and straight forward language. Avoid irrelevancy. Cite your sources properly.
Include the author’s last name, the year of publishment and the page number for using quotes. This should be in parenthesis right after using the quotation. For instance, “In-text citations are the best way to avoid being blamed for plagiarism.”(Rebecca, 2007, p.121)
Cite sources even if you intend to paraphrase someone else’s ideas to give credit to the original author. For instance, Plagiarism is a heinous academic crime. (Rebecca, 2007).
Include the Reference List
After you are done with writing the academic paper you must include the reference list. A reference list is basically detailed information of sources that you cited for writing the academic paper. Make sure to center the word ‘Reference’ when you begin to write the reference list on top. The APA style is one of the most common styles followed in various institutes as it lessen the risk of being charged of plagiarism and is not very complicated to follow.
