Abstract
This academic paper examines a brief history of tennis and how it became popular throughout Europe and The United States of America. Tennis is a game which looks so easy when watched on TV during the elite tournaments but practically it is not such an easy game to play as it involves complicated footwork and right timing of the tennis ball. Tennis is usually played among two rivals in singles format while the doubles format consists of 4 players with a team of two on each side. After soccer tennis is the most widely watched sports. Tennis is an expensive game which used to be played by the elite classes in Europe a century ago. The writer of the academic paper discusses the obstacles that a tennis player has to face while in the process of becoming a professional player. Lastly the author explains the importance of psychological intervention to strengthen the players mentally.

The game of tennis has its roots from the 12th century when the game was played with hands in France and was called the handball game or “Jue de Paume” (Game of the Palm) in French. Gradually the game started using the racquets to increase the reach of the hands to the ball. The game was invented by the European monks that were played mainly on ceremonial occasions. The very first tennis balls were made of woods later on to create bounce cellulite material was used to develop tennis balls. As the game evolved and became popular throughout Europe in 1870 in the district of Wimbledon in London All England Croquet Club was introduced where lawn tennis is still played every year,(The Origins of Tennis, 2003).
